We left Henderson's Hideaway at about 9.30am, the sun shining and only a hint of mosquitoes around the tent. We stopped at South Royalton for additional carbs and found them in the form of maple cheese bread - delicious, worth finding a recipe for. Bread whirls soaked with maple syrup and somehow with cream cheese too. A local on a bike chatted to us - he had already done 17 miles on his morning bike ride and was going to reach 30 miles by th time he got home. He was wearing am Alaska cycling shirt, same as one seen on our first transam. It turns out that his daughter lives in Alaska and he recommended the cycle trails there. Off road presumably. I asked about winter here - can he do his bike ride? He said winters were getting slushy rather than heavy snow. We felt a touch of climate guilt when we said we were from the UK (but we haven't flown for the previous ten years, it's in our carbon 5 ton budget.). We should all have a carbon budget... We set off for the long preliminaries to get to our last biggish climb in the Appalachians - the Brandon Gap. So we went via Rochester then up and over quite a steep climb, short stop at the top, then a wonderful downhill to Brandon (37.2mph at the max - quite enough. At Brandon we eventually worked out that we were too late to get the ferry we need and that's 20 miles away. The library has free wifi and so helped enormously. (This phone is finding very little t mobile coverage in New England.) There's no camping sites near the ferry. So we hauled up at the Country Village Campground - excellent value at $35 with a swimming pool- used shortly after arrival - and excellent showers. And I've even managed to charge this phone. Dinner was another large salad with grainy bread. Today, like yesterday, we have drunk litres of water and orange due to the heat. Bigger mileage tomorrow. The photo shows Guy by a sign that promises 4 miles of 1 in 8.... that downhill gave me my topspeed so far c. 38mph
