To St Augustine Beach – 7th March 2014

From Blue Springs to St Augustine Beach, about 76 miles.

Mural at DeLand - Naval Air StationA day of flat and unremarkable cycling, but with herons on the creeks and a pelican on the sea, plus excellent murals at De Land and a real old town at Bunnell – a lovely university town with a proper high street and some sense of history rather than the by now familiar ribbon development. And surfers in so-so surf (good size but a bit irregular) at Flagler Beach The weather was cool, cloudy with a cross headwind from the NW and in the afternoon I put my gloves on. So much for the sunshine state so far. The route was good – SR17 to De Land, SR11 to Bunnell, SR100 to Flagler Beach, A1A to St Augustine Beach.

We can’t recommend the KOA at St Augustine Beach since it cost us $43 dollars to camp (only 27 at the rather idyllic Blue Springs) and the camping area is squeezed in by a noisy road. Guy is at this very moment trying to get ear plugs at a nearby pharmacy. Tomorrow historic St Augustine and the start of the route to California!
