The Muskie Motel is a cheap and pleasant place where we drank tea by the vat and we left a bit late - though this was because I needed to visit the T mobile shop to sort out another month of US Internet and calls on my mobile. The whole experience was a bit farcical. The shop couldn't access my account and I couldn't renew online since the poor programming of the T mobile site means that you need a USA zip code for the address of your payment card - even when the drop down of countries allows a UK address! Well by setting up an account with pin I could then get the shop to access my account and pay them directly to renew my account for another month. Ages were spent trying the T mobile automated call system. Awful. This all took time and we didn't leave Muscatine until 11am with a 70+ mile day ahead... We also were heading mostly north with a steady headwind. A large dog chased after Guy but didn't notice me - so effectively I was chasing the dog. It gave up chasing Guy and had the surprise of myself behind him. Looked puzzled for a moment... We kept pushing north along gently hilly roads through Bennett, Lowden, Oxford Junction - great grocery store right in the middle of the town - Wyoming, Onslow and then as the sun cooled down the headwind dropped and we got going a bit faster then a detour sign - which we ignored (we would have been cycling in the dark) and sped on. A small dog joined us for a while but fortunately was called away - friendly but risky in the middle of our speeding wheels - the road kept announcing that it was closed and when we finally got to the roadworks they were easily avoidable by bike by just going over a small lawn to a side street (the lawn's owner pointing the way in a typical friendly, practical American way). We are now in the Legion Park, our tent pitched in an out of the way area while a baseball match or three goes on, unfolding its curious ritual, within a hundred yards. People are running fast as they can, saying 'let's go' and eating hot dogs. It's 10.30pm, do they have no mercy...? The Tour de France is nearing its end and we have already done nearly a tour de France number of miles since starting almost a month ago....
