Today started off with the traditional breakfast for transam bikers - which is heaps of pancakes with a lot of maple syrup like sugaring. Great for firing yourself up for 60+ miles. There was some veggies eaten too - sensible because we've been living on filling station food for a while. The cycling was mostly pleasant and sunny with a SSW wind offering a little headwind at times. There was though a severe rainstorm as we finished the pancakes. See the photo. It looked like the whole day might be about dodging rainstorms. Initially it looked like that. A NNW wind was blowing the rainstorms towards us as we cycled but the wind switched to the more usual SSW and the sky cleared. The winds seem to strengthen withecthe heat, occasionally switching direction for moment or two. It became a hot and modestly humid day. Gas station food for lunch at Odell but there's a nice park with shelter from the sun. That was c. 40 miles done. Then Odell to Wenona with the water tower indicating the town a few miles out. Hot sun. Some patches of rudbeckia and echinaceas in areas left wild amongst the soy plants. We arrived and shopped at the Family Dollar. And not just us but two other transam bicycles were in the park by mid evening. Jake from Maui (going east) and Isaac from Brooklyn (going west, yes this means he is about to overtake us, we treat this nonchalantly - not in a hurry, plane to catch isn't until Sept, youth before age, etc). And we're also told storms (T storms) are coming in (by two different people) and it would be wise to camp under the cover of the pavilion. Well Guy is the most stubborn person I know so that made no impression. The tent can be pitched indoors with clever tying if guy ropes to furniture. It is also true this tent has survived torrential rain so it should be OK. Obviously thunderbolts are not going to be stopped by our tent but... Tomorrow may be, at best perhaps, a repeat of today 's weather.
